What is our central education programme’s purpose, aim and direction?

Our Physio First education sub committee historically has strived to empower members by providing courses and learning on both clinical and business topics to enhance their skills within the context of the current evidence base. However, changes to our marketplace have seen an increasing number of course providers emerge, in addition to new ways of gaining CPD such as online learning and forums.

With finite resources and as a not-for-profit organisation, it is neither desirable nor possible for us to compete to deliver similar course content.

In addition, Physio First has been working hard in trying to forecast our purpose for the next 5 years and through a staged facilitatory process the executive have now articulated this as our ‘’statement of intent’’ which is to: "Champion evidence-based, cost effective private physiotherapy with Physio First members in the changing healthcare marketplace’’.

As a result of this determining of Physio first’s purpose, aim and direction of travel, our education committee have had to evaluate every course on the centrally run education programme to ensure that it strategically aligns with the statement above.

Our committee have also had to decide on a strategy to help us to reach our goals, which is now defined as; "to engage with strategically and culturally aligned tutors to deliver courses that are simply not available anywhere else and that empower members of Physio first to achieve our intent’’

Our ethos is very much about delivering new evidence to physiotherapists in private practice in order to give them cutting edge material and offer a unique service in this changing marketplace. It is our intention to promote rigorous, robust and validated data to give private practitioners the ability to profoundly support and defend the profession.

To be able to defend our profession we need to demonstrate our cost effectiveness; this may be in the use of outcome measures such as PROMS (patient reported outcome measures) or by signing up to the Physio First Data for Impact study. Stakeholders such as health insurers are increasingly looking at the value they receive for their rehabilitation ‘spend’, the bulk of which is on MSK conditions such as low back pain. The aim of our education sub committee is to explore ways in which we can assist members to demonstrate an advanced level of practice to purchasers of private physiotherapy, whilst retaining their own clinical autonomy.

Can I request for a specific central course to run in my region and who do I contact?

All centrally run courses are organised by our Physio First office team and are hosted by an elected Region Officer.

It is the Regional Officer's responsibility to liaise with their members to ensure that any requests are addressed.

Due to this, if you would like to request a specific central course to run in your region please contact your relevant Regional Officer who will in turn notify our education team.

All course requests will then be considered when developing our central education programme for the following year. Your Regional Officer will continue to keep you updated.
